Recolonization FAQs
When is Alpha Omega eligible to recolonize on the Ohio University Campus?
The earliest that Alpha Omega can petition for Recolonization is the fall semester of 2013. Approvals to do so will be needed from Ohio University Greek Life and the International Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta.
Are Recolonization approvals guaranteed?
No.
The decision to recolonize will be based on many factors, including the Greek Life Environment on the Ohio University Campus, the commitment of Alpha Omega Graduate Brothers to provide essential manpower to participate in the process of Recolonization and beyond, and having raised the funds necessary in advance to support and to sustain the Recolonization effort.
When must we request permission to recolonize from Ohio University and Phi Gamma Delta?
Our International Fraternity is presently executing a Strategic Growth Initiative to establish 170 Phi Gamma Delta Chapters on college campuses in the United States and Canada by the Fraternity’s 170th Anniversary in 2018. Our Expansion Staff in Lexington, KY is currently scheduling colonization and recolonization efforts out a minimum of three years forward.
Ohio University Greek Life has agreed to work with us when our International Headquarters and our Graduate Brothers are prepared to embark on a recolonization of the chapter.
Again, we will not be eligible to begin recolonization activities until the fall semester of 2013.
What will be required to recolonize beyond the approvals of Ohio University Greek Life and Phi Gamma Delta International Headquarters?
A commitment by a sufficient number of Graduate Brother volunteers will be needed in order to adequately staff an Athens Area-Based local Board of Colony Advisers (BCA), as well as a complement of knowledgeable Graduate Brothers to operate and manage the House Corporation and Graduate Association.
In addition, we will need to raise funds to support this effort as further described below.
What is the current status of the chapter house at 20 South College Street?
The chapter house is currently leased to CPT Moore Housing Corp., which is the house corporation for the Ohio Nu Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. The lease agreement term runs from August 1, 2009 thru July 31, 2011 and also contains two one year options to renew. Assuming that CPT Moore exercises both renewal extension options, the lease agreement will expire on July 31, 2013.
What is the status of the mortgage on the chapter house?
All monthly mortgage payments are current and are being paid timely to Peoples Bank. The existing mortgage is scheduled to be repaid in full on July 22, 2013.
Do we plan to reoccupy 20 South College Street when we recolonize?
This question will be answered by conducting a thorough study of our options and the financial implications of each option over the next several years. A Strategic House Assessment Committee will be appointed to perform this analysis and to present options for discussion at a future AOGA Annual Meeting and an ultimate decision. How many volunteers will be needed for Recolonization?
The initial recruitment of members for the Delta Colony will be orchestrated by the Expansion and Field Staff from our International Headquarters in Lexington, KY. We must have in place, in Athens, a sufficient number of Graduate Brothers who will be able to work with the Delta Colony Members as part of the Board of Colony Advisers (BCA) and a Purple Legionnaire. We project that we will need a minimum of 15 Graduate Brothers who will fill this role.
Apart from the Board of Colony Advisers, we will need Graduate Brothers willing to serve on the House Corporation and Graduate Association.
Will the number of volunteers decrease once the Delta Colony becomes a Chapter?
This is a great question; the answer is No.
The manpower requirements to recolonize will remain the same once the Delta Colony is rechartered. The strongest chapters in Phi Gamma Delta are those that have consistent and sufficient graduate support. We must have the commitment of Graduate Brother volunteers who will be willing to serve the Delta Colony, ultimately the rechartered Alpha Omega Chapter, and who will find replacements for themselves when they wish to disengage as an adviser.
How long will it take for the Delta Colony to be eligible for rechartering?
There is no prescribed length of time that a Delta Colony must operate before being eligible to petition for its charter. On average, Delta Colonies in Phi Gamma Delta have successfully petitioned for chartering between 18 months and 24 months, but this is not guaranteed. The Delta Colony must exhibit independent, tangible evidence over a period of time that it can successfully recruit and educate its members, as well as operate successfully in the areas of scholarship, brotherhood, philanthropy, graduate relations and university relations.
How much money will it take to recolonize the chapter?
Alpha Omega will have to absorb the costs of having Phi Gamma Delta Expansion and Field personnel reside in Athens to recruit, interview and train Delta Colony Members in the values and customs of Phi Gamma Delta. Once the Delta Colony Alpha Class is formed, Expansion and Field personnel will continue to periodically visit campus to monitor progress and to assist the Board of Colony Advisers (BCA) in the colonization process.
The projected cost of $12,000 will need to be raised and placed on deposit with our International Headquarters in advance of the scheduled Recolonization effort.
Are there additional funds that will be required?
Yes.
We will need to raise additional funds to replace/refresh esoteric equipment for the chapter (up to $10,000), plan a chartering weekend event (up to $20,000) and to train Graduate Brothers to be effective advisers to the Colony (estimated at $10,000).
Why can’t these funds be paid by the House Corporation or borrowed against the house?
The borrowing capacity of the house corporation is a function of several factors: the value of the house, our ability to service the debt each month based on our revenues and, of course, prevailing rates of interest. Based on our past experience in operating the chapter house, we will need to preserve our maximum borrowing limit exclusively for needed house capital improvements.
How can I volunteer to become involved as a Graduate Adviser?
We have many manpower needs that must be filled. Some of these positions will require local or regional (to Athens) residence; others can be managed without geographic distinction. Please contact John Ziza (
johnziza@adgility.com) and let him know of your interests today!
