Dear Brothers,
All roads led to Athens, Ohio the last weekend in April as we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of our glorious chapter. I believe it was a defining moment in our history as a chapter and as a graduate association. With the acceptance and implementation of our new strategic plan, we are poised to move forward managing our future in the best way possible. We have a core of brothers who are bringing their talents and interest to specific roles and responsibilities on the board. It’s these brothers who will offer their input, time and dedication in order to solve issues and challenges that will surely loom on the horizon.
Immediate needs call for a renovation and upgrade of the kitchen. Janet Smith has been working her culinary magic on a stove/oven that offers her less than ½ of its total capabilities. We need to upgrade some of the appliances to commercial grade, and we need to replace the flooring. AOGA Director Tom Frame '72, who oversees the Food Service aspect of our Board Club operation, will be working toward updating the kitchen. I believe that these kinds of improvements are the only start of repairs and upgrades that we will need to make throughout the house in the coming years.
However, maintaining the house is only part of what our association should be concentrating on. Social events and opportunities for brothers and their families to meet should also be on our radar screen. Examples of these activities include the highly successful AOGA Golf Outing organized by Tim Boesken '71 last Fall, and for our younger graduates, the annual Memorial Day Weekend Outing in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Pig Dinner should not be the only time we see each other and opportunities exist for us to regionalize some of these gatherings of Alpha Omega Brothers. Leadership development of the undergrads must continue to be one of our primary goals. And, perhaps we can tap into the varying and successful careers of our brotherhood and offer mentoring and internship programs to the undergrads. I could go on. But I think you get the idea; expansion of our programming, however, requires the involvement and willingness of Brothers to organize and coordinate each event.
One of the changes we are making this fiscal year, to reach out to more Alpha Omega Graduate Brothers, is to formally meet as a Board at least twice. My intent, however, is to actually schedule meetings three times: our traditional Annual Meeting in Athens at Pig Dinner and twice in different cities in Ohio - possibly Columbus and Cincinnati/Dayton. I will be working with Board Members over the summer to establish some concrete dates and we will publish them on this website toward the end of the summer. I hope that you will join us and participate if your schedule permits.
I am excited by our future and hope that you are too. Keep in touch and let me hear what’s on your mind. I am only an email or phone call away. All the best wishes for a great summer,
Fraternally,
John
