Brother Ron Sages ’73
Newly Elected Archon Treasurer

The 158th Ekklesia, held in Minneapolis, Minnesota August 10 - 13, 2006, elected a new Archonate to lead our Fraternity through the next biennium.  Among the nine (9) Brothers now serving as Archons until 2008 is Alpha Omega's own Brother Ron Sages '73, who was elected Archon Treasurer.

Born in the U.K. and a native of the Northeast, Ron attended Ohio University from 1969-1973, originally to become an aeronautical engineer.  After several quarters of physics, Ron promptly decided that his future was as an airline passenger, rather than as an airline pilot!

Recruited for rush by Brother Roger Smith '72, Ron pledged Phi Gamma Delta Winter Quarter of his junior year.  With little time remaining until graduation, Ron accepted responsibility as Fall Quarter 1972 Rush Chair, remaining on campus thru the summer to work on pre-college.  "My strategy was slightly different from the other fraternities on campus.  I opted to work on pre-college with parents of incoming freshmen.  Many were concerned about the transition their sons and daughters were about to make.  I offered to contact them upon their arrival in the fall to ensure they were settled.  Parents were only too willing to supply me with names and dorm room numbers." After a successful fall quarter rush, which resulted in the pledging of current AOGA President John A. Cassese '76, Ron moved into Pledge Education winter quarter 1973 and fulfilled this responsibility just prior to graduation.

Immediately upon graduation in 1973, Ron joined the Board of The Alpha Omega Graduate Association and was elected President in 1975.  In 1977, Ron stepped down as President and assumed responsibility for House Corporation Finances as Treasurer, under AOGA President Dave Slater '67.  Remaining in that position for a ten (10) year period, Ron retired from the Board in 1986 after completing the acquisition of the new Chapter House at 20 South College Street, working in conjunction with Brothers Dave Slater '67 and General Counsel Ken Sechler '71.

Intermittently over the next ten years, Ron continued to serve AOGA, Inc. in various capacities until he was elected to the Board of Directors of The Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation in 1996.  During the six (6) years Ron served on the Educational Foundation, he restructured the portfolio management function for the Foundation's Endowment Funds and established a Planned Giving Program, which is now managed full-time by Foundation Chief Operating Officer, Will Shier (DePauw '88).

In 2002, Ron joined the Financial Advisory Board ("FAB"), which counsels the Archonate on various financial and asset management issues affecting the operation of the Fraternity and was named FAB Chair by the Archons in August 2004.  Ron also became a member of the Delta Colony effort in New York City to reestablish a Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta on the campus of Columbia University.  Ron is a member of the Xi Graduate Chapter of New York City.

Ron's extra curricular activities over the years have extended beyond Phi Gamma Delta and have included his firm functioning as an Adviser on Planned Giving and Development to many religious and community support organizations, both in New York City, and in Fairfield County, Connecticut.  Ron is a member of the Stamford CFA Society and is also a member and past President of The Stamford Jaycees, Inc. and of the Estate Planning Council of Lower Fairfield County (CT).

Professionally, Ron spent the first twenty (20) years of his career in corporate life, initially with The Connecticut Bank and Trust Company and, subsequently, as a manager in the Global Asset Management Division/The Private Bank at Bankers Trust Company in New York City.  In the fall of 1992, Ron established his present firm, Chapin Asset Management, Inc., which is a boutique asset/wealth management firm catering to high net worth clients.  A frequent speaker on the subject of wealth transfer planning and taxable portfolio management, Ron has published extensively on these topics in trade publications in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Ron, his wife, Betsy, and their two (2) Golden Retrievers, Molly & Quentin, reside in Fairfield, Connecticut.  The Sages's have two (2) adult daughters, Laurie & Patti.
