Over 220 Attend 40th Anniversary Celebration!
Over the weekend of April 28, 29 & 30, 2006 more than 220 Alpha Omega Brothers attended our 40th Anniversary Celebration in Athens, Ohio!!
Friday afternoon, a reception was held at the Ohio University Inn to honor our Charter Members (pictured above with Dr. & Mrs. McDavis). Dignitaries in attendance included Ohio University President Dr. Roderick McDavis and his wife, Deborah, Dean of Students Terrence Hogan, Phi Gamma Delta Executive Director & Editor Bill Martin (Mississippi State '75), Section Chief Matt Dixon (Ohio Wesleyan '99), Field Secretaries Lee Souter (Vermont '05) and Marcus Hitt (Wittenberg '05), Undergraduate Chapter Officers, members of the AOGA Board of Directors and the Alpha Omega Chapter Board of Chapter Advisers.
(Left - Jack Rohrer '84, Jody Lieber '87 & Tim Armstrong '84 at Friday Buffet) Upon the conclusion of the reception, Brothers and Guests moved outdoors to the Ohio University Inn patio where a "kick-off" buffet dinner was attended by more than 90 individuals.
(Right - Art Murphy '68, John Trombley '69 & Tom Frame '72 at Friday Buffet) Time and again, Brothers shook hands, hugged, laughed and conversed with one another as they enjoyed an elaborate buffet dinner during a pleasant spring evening.
Saturday morning, many Brothers from the first three decades of Alpha Omega's existence toured our original Chapter House at
39 North College Street, courtesy of the present owners. Now the offices of a local law firm, Brothers visited all three (3) floors viewing what has changed structurally and to identify any indications that the FIJIs once resided in the building.
Late morning, a Memorial Service was held at Galbreath Memorial Chapel on campus to remember those Brothers who had passed ad astra. Attended by both Graduate and Undergraduate Brothers, John Cassese '76 led a service that was both solemn and celebratory in nature.
At noon, FIJI Chef Janet Smith provided all in attendance with a hearty cold cut and salad buffet lunch, followed by a surprise dessert sheet cake containing the Crest of our Fraternity and the inscription: "Phi Gamma Delta, 2006 Pig Dinner, Celebrating 40 Years of Brotherhood."
After lunch, Brothers walked to Baker Center for the Annual Meeting of The Alpha Omega Graduate Association, Inc. (see adjacent article; above right). This was likely the last time many Graduate Brothers would see Baker Center in its present state, as the new Ohio U Student Center is scheduled to open January 1, 2007.
The 40th Anniversary Pig Dinner Banquet began at 6 p.m. with Class Receptions at the Nelson Commons Dining Hall. Following the cocktail hour, Brothers and Guests were treated to a delicious beef tenderloin dinner while a traditional Pig Dinner Program was presented.
Brothers John Petrone '67, Tom Strauchon '73, Gary Staley '89, Charlie Weckman '93 & Ryan Ellsworth '04 took turns reminiscing about the eras during which they were Undergraduate Members of Alpha Omega Chapter.
(Charlie Weckman '93 reminisces about the 90s) The Keynote Address was delivered by Phi Gamma Delta Executive Director & Editor Bill Martin (Mississippi State '75), who spoke of the Fraternity's Commitment to the Fraternity's Five (5) Values and the significance of Brothers' involvement in Phi Gamma Delta beyond their local chapters.
Highlights of the evening included the presentation of the 2004 Haynes Award for the Most Effective Section Chief Award to Kevin McGraw '90 and the 2005 Coulter Cup Award to Dave Slater '67 for outstanding contributions to Alpha Omega Chapter. Additional Awards were presented to retiring Purple Legionnaire Bill Sams '67, retiring AOGA President Dave Slater '67, Most Outstanding Senior Mike Hajoway '06, Past Chapter Presidents Mike Hajoway '06 and Joe Willaman '07 and a Certificate of Appreciation to Ron Sages '73 for the Website Development.
Many thanks to Brothers John Clark '79 (Co Chair), Ryan Neises '07 (Co-Chair), Adam Lawrence '08 (Co Chair), Neil Wunder '08 (Co Chair), Chris Moehring '74 (Golf Outings), Tim Davis '90 (Silent Auction), Paul Deering 'GR (Refreshments), & Dave Slater '67 (Scholarship Endowment Fundraising) for their outstanding and tireless efforts in making the 40th Anniversary Celebration a memorable event!

AOGA, Inc. Annual Meeting Held; 2006-07 House Corporation & BCA Members Elected
|
| |
The Annual Meeting of The Alpha Omega Graduate Association, Inc. was held on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Baker Center. Over 50 Graduate and Undergraduate Brothers attended the meeting and learned in greater detail about the AOGA Strategic Plan that was adopted at the February Board Meeting in Columbus, Ohio.
The focus of the Strategic Plan is to "reengineer" the House Corporation so that time devoted by Brothers as graduate volunteers is used wisely and does not result in an undue burden being placed upon any individual Brother or group of Brothers.
This necessitates leveraging technology to a much greater extent than we have used in the past, outsourcing routine day-by-day functions to competent, local professionals, and evolving from a Board of functional "doers" to a Board of Brothers who will provide strategic direction and ideas going forward.
Initially, there will be limitations occasioned by budget constraints and the need to transition functions gradually over several fiscal years to ensure continuity without disruption in the daily operation of the Chapter House at 20 South College.
The direction, however, is clear: Survival depends upon successful implementation of a decentralized management structure.
Additional topics covered at the Annual Meeting included the renovation of the kitchen, as Athens City Codes have been updated and the existing equipment is showing its age, and the adoption of By- Law Amendments to comport with the Strategic Plan as it is implemented.
The final piece of business transacted at the Annual Meeting was the election of Officers and Directors for the 2006-07 fiscal year. We are delighted to report that Graduate Brothers from recent classes have volunteered to serve on the AOGA Board of Directors and the Alpha Omega Board of Chapter Advisers. The newly-elected AOGA Board and BCA Members and their respective areas of responsibility can be viewed by clicking here.
