Coulter Cup

Dave Slater '67 Recipient of

2005 Phi Gamma Delta Chan F. Coulter Cup Award

(Lexington, KY, October 13, 2005). William A. Martin, III, Executive Director and Editor of the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta, announced earlier today that David F. Slater (Ohio ’67) has been selected as the 2005 Chan F. Coulter Cup Award Recipient.

The Coulter Cup Award is named for Chan F. Coulter, Iowa ’25, who was involved in Phi Gamma Delta for over 60 years in a variety of capacities, including House Corporation Treasurer and Purple Legionnaire of the Mu Deuteron (University of Iowa) Chapter and as Section Chief for The International Fraternity. This Award was proposed by the Mu Deuteron Chapter in 1978 at the 130th Ekklesia and is presented annually to the graduate brother who has contributed the most to an undergraduate chapter through service in a capacity other than as a Purple Legionnaire or General Officer.

In making this announcement, Bill Martin stated that “Dave is exactly the kind of graduate brother the [Iowa] chapter wanted to recognize when they proposed this award.”

Nominated by the Alpha Omega Chapter this past April, and endorsed by a large cadre of Graduate FIJI Brothers from within Alpha Omega Chapter and around the United States, Dave is well known for his dedication to the ideals of Phi Gamma Delta. Voluminous Letters of Recommendation were submitted in support of Dave’s nomination, all echoing a common theme, as evidenced by these following excerpts:

“Dave’s involvement with the chapter, for decades, is precisely the type of individual the Coulter Cup was intended to recognize.”

-- Jerry Wanek (Iowa ’80)

Archon President 2002-04

“In all my years with the Fraternity, I know of only a few graduate brothers who have devoted their lives to the pursuit of excellence for their chapter and our great Fraternity. Dave Slater is one of those outstanding men!”

-- Lee C. Schmitt (Miami ’63)
Archon Councilor 1982-86

“I would be proud to nominate Dave Slater!”

-- William Bracewell (Georgia Faculty ’68)
Phi Gamma Delta Educational Director
2000 - Present

“Dave Slater has impacted Alpha Omega by contributing steadfast guidance to his undergraduate brothers over the years, leading to both chapter continuity and, more importantly, to their personal growth as quality men.”

-- Timothy C. Adams '88
AOGA Corporate Secretary

“Dave is a person that you simply cannot say no to. That is not because of intimidation or fear; it is because everyone in Phi Gamma Delta knows how hard Dave works for the fraternity and how he wants the fraternity to succeed.”

-- Michael J. Hajoway ’06
Alpha Omega Chapter President 2004-05

“I wanted to chime in that you couldn't find a more purple guy; he's been working hard for his Ohio Chapter through thick and thin. But also has been doing wonderful things for the chapters here in Georgia for a long time.”

-- Thomas A. Adams (Emory ’70)
Chief of Section XII
Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta

“In this age of "me, me, me," it is rare for someone to dedicate themselves to a value-based organization with the sole purpose of helping others. Yet Dave has done this for an amazing 39 years!”

-- Kevin M. Jehl ’94
Alpha Omega Board of Chapter Advisers

“When it counted, really counted, Dave and the AOGA were there good times and bad....if there is one thing to say about Dave Slater, he is always there for his brothers. Thanks Dave!.”

-- Tiger Thiel ’85
Phi Gamma Delta Field Secretary #95

As the second President of Delta Colony and the first President of Alpha Omega Chapter, Dave was instrumental in providing the leadership necessary for the Colony to petition and receive a Charter as the 89th Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta in only 367 days, unheard of at that time. However, Dave is probably best known at Alpha Omega of Phi Gamma Delta for his perennial role as President of The Alpha Omega Graduate Association, which served, out of necessity, treble roles for many years as the House Corporation, Graduate Association and Board of Chapter Advisers for Alpha Omega. As Alpha Omega evolved and matured and more Phi Gams settled within a short drive of the Athens Community, AOGA relinquished its role as BCA and an independent Board of Chapter Advisers was established. While every Alpha Omega Phi Gam knows first hand of the countless hours Dave has devoted to on-site visits, meetings, crisis management, phone calls and letter writing, his most enduring contribution at Alpha Omega thus far is likely his vision for the chapter and the strategy that was developed to acquire a new Chapter House in the mid 1980s .

Forty (40) years and 668 graduates of Alpha Omega Chapter later serve as compelling evidence of Dave's love for Phi Gamma Delta and Alpha Omega Chapter. Without hesitation, those 668 graduates say: "Thanks, Dave!! and Perge!"
