It is with grief and great sorrow that we mourn the death of Brother Bob Smart’67. Bob died Sunday, April 5, 1998 from complications following a bone marrow transplant, which took place two months ago. Bob was being treated for chronic lymphatic leukemia.
Bob was a private, though intensely caring soul. He served on the Graduate Association Board of Directors for well over 10 years, insuring that, whatever the issue at hand, it was scrutinized from every angle to insure the job was done right, a motto he also pursued at Ford, where he was a long time senior engineer.
Bob was a man of honesty and integrity whose advice, counsel and judgment everyone deeply respected. He believed in the ideals of the fraternity and consistently sought to see those ideals fulfilled. Bob was a man of consistency. He especially believed in academic achievement and was enthusiastic in helping establish and support AOGA’s scholarship programs which go back 30 years.
While not seeking to be the center of the conversation, Bob basked in its glow and absorbed the essence of that which was truly important. Bob’s keen mind could slice through an issue like a hot knife through butter.
Bob was a friend who will be missed greatly.
Bob is survived by his wife Ingrid and teenage daughters Britt and Kristen.
Contributions in Bob’s memory can be sent to Ohio University’s College of Engineering, Athens, OH, 45701. AOGA has named Bob “Director, In Memoriam” of AOGA’s newly endowed Scholarship Fund with The Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation. Contributions can also be made, in Bob’s memory, to The Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation/Ohio Chapter, 1201 Red Mile Road, PO Box 4599, Lexington. KY 40544.
Rest among the stars, dear friend.
