It is with deep regret that we report the death of Brother Alan K. Fox (William Jewell’61). Al was in failing health for quite some time and in a nursing home. His death was recently confirmed by his College, William Jewell (February 1999).
For those who go back to the early days of Alpha Omega, Al was an integral part of the heady and exciting days of the fraternity and our youth. Al so loved Phi Gamma Delta and expressed it in endless ways (not the least of which were the marathon talks “in the cooler” of the Tavern and the late night phone calls to his Pledge Brother “Smokey the Bear” aka Mike Fligg, in Missouri). Gregarious and outspoken, Fox was as big hearted as they come. The scores of Fijis employed at the Tavern, over those many years, knew of his big heartedness and generosity, as did the countless Fijis who hoisted “just a few” on the house.
Al was so excited at the Denver Ekklesia in ’66 when Delta Colony got its Charter and how very proud he was when he purchased and presented “Gamma” to the newly chartered Brotherhood.
We are in the Tavern; Al is in his short sleeve white shirt, scurrying back and forth, pouring drinks, reminding everyone we’re to meet at Black Julie’s after closing; we’re perched upon the barstools, feet atop the brass foot rail, elbows sliding on the polished wooden bar; there’s a glance along the entrance wall crammed with black & white photos of the famed Varsity Men of old OU; “The Doors” is blasting “Come On, Come On, Touch Me Babe ..….” from the Juke Box; the Brothers are raucously playing “Skippy”, the Tavern’s infamous bowling machine; the taste of pickled eggs, mustard and cheese plates; the ice cold pilsner of Michelob in hand (a quarter a Mich; thirty-two cents in later inflated years); everyone knows every other Greek in the place; a stare up at the long row of German beer steins above the bar, each emblazoned with its Greek coat of arms. Ah!
Al and the Tavern. Inseparable. We miss them both.
Alan K. Fox (William Jewell’61), former PL and Brother, will remain in our hearts, our memories and our stories for years and years to come.
Donations, in Al’s memory, can be made to our Ohio Chapter Scholarship Fund, c/o The Phi Gamma Educational Foundation, 1201 Red Mile Road, PO Box 4599, Lexington, KY 40544-4599.
